What Is a Career Portfolio?

A career portfolio is an organised collection of documents and evidence that shows a person's qualifications, professional development, experience, skills and achievements.

A portfolio can help users:

  • Reflect on their learning and development.
  • Prepare for job applications and interviews.
  • Record achievements and professional activities.
  • Identify skills or experience they want to develop.
  • Support professional review or appraisal where relevant.
Portfolio requirements differ between employers, professional bodies and countries. A portfolio does not need to be complicated — you can begin with a simple digital folder and build it gradually.

What Should I Include?

Select the categories relevant to your career stage and goals. You do not need every category.

A. Career Summary

  • Current role or career stage.
  • Career interests and goals.
  • Updated CV.

B. Qualifications and Registration

  • Relevant qualifications and certificates.
  • Professional registration details where applicable.
  • Professional memberships where relevant.

C. CPD and Learning

  • Courses and workshops.
  • Conferences and webinars.
  • Relevant learning activities.
  • Short reflections on what was learned and how it may influence practice.

D. Clinical or Professional Experience

  • Relevant clinical placements or employment.
  • Skills developed.
  • Areas of practice.
  • Responsibilities and learning goals.

E. Projects and Achievements

  • Audit or quality improvement activities.
  • Research or presentations.
  • Teaching or student support.
  • Publications, technical projects or service development where relevant.

F. Feedback and Reflection

  • Relevant feedback from supervisors, educators or colleagues.
  • Reflective learning.
  • Examples of how feedback informed development.

Describe your registration status accurately. Do not claim qualifications or registration you do not hold.
