Networking

Build professional networks in radiography.

Networking

Professional networking helps radiographers develop relationships, share knowledge, discover career opportunities and stay informed about changes in medical imaging. Networking takes place through professional societies, colleagues, conferences, webinars, academic communities, research collaborations, industry events and online platforms.

Important: Networking is not simply about finding a job or collecting contacts. Effective networking involves genuine professional relationships, mutual learning, respectful communication and continued engagement with the radiography community. Networking may support career development but does not guarantee employment or replace the qualifications, experience and registration required for a role.

1. Why Networking Matters

Career opportunities Discover vacancies, specialist roles, academic posts and industry opportunities.
Professional learning Learn from experienced radiographers and colleagues in different specialties.
Mentoring and guidance Connect with professionals who can offer career and education advice.
Conferences and CPD Find webinars, workshops, professional meetings and specialist events.
Research and education Identify collaborations, presentations, publications and teaching opportunities.
Industry awareness Understand emerging technologies, clinical applications and innovation.
International development Learn about professional practice and pathways in other countries.
Professional visibility Develop a credible profile and make your expertise easier to discover.

2. Types of Professional Networking

Online Professional Networking

Platforms such as LinkedIn help radiographers build a professional profile, connect with peers and industry professionals, follow societies and organisations, and learn about conferences and vacancies.

LinkedIn

Keep your profile accurate, avoid sharing confidential patient information, and send personalised connection messages.

Peer and Workplace Networking

Maintain relationships with classmates, colleagues, senior radiographers, radiologists, medical physicists, clinical educators and the wider multidisciplinary team. Stay in contact when changing departments or employers.

Professional Societies and Specialist Groups

Societies and special interest groups provide conferences, CPD, webinars, publications, specialist communities, and opportunities for mentoring, volunteering and committee participation.

Conferences, Exhibitions and Professional Events

Review the programme in advance, identify relevant sessions, prepare questions, speak with attendees and exhibitors respectfully, attend poster sessions, and follow up with new contacts after the event.

Academic, Research and Educational Networking

Connect with lecturers, clinical educators, researchers and academic departments. Opportunities include collaborative projects, seminars, poster presentations, publications and shared teaching resources.

Industry and Technology Networking

Connect with application specialists, clinical scientists, medical physicists, product specialists and professionals in healthcare IT, equipment development, imaging software and AI. Global Radiographers does not endorse any particular imaging manufacturer.

3. How to Network Effectively

1
Build your professional profile Summarise your qualifications, experience, skills, interests and CPD. Keep all information accurate.
2
Identify relevant communities Start with peers, former colleagues, professional societies, specialist groups and organisations relevant to your career.
3
Make a meaningful first contact Introduce yourself briefly, explain the shared interest, and ask a specific, respectful question.
4
Contribute as well as connect Participate in discussions, share appropriate resources, acknowledge others’ expertise, and contribute constructively.
5
Maintain relationships Follow up after events, thank people for useful advice, and stay in contact when you have a professional reason to reconnect.

Sample LinkedIn Connection Message

“Hello, I am a radiographer interested in developing my knowledge of [specialty or professional area]. I came across your work on [specific topic] and found it relevant to my interests. I would be pleased to connect and follow your professional updates.”

Personalise messages rather than sending the same generic request repeatedly.
